In 1837, John Hack constructed the first Catholic church in Lake County, in the area known as the "Prairie West." Mr. Hack, his wife and their 11 children settled in the area after immigrating from Germany.

The family was joined twice a month, starting in 1839, by a Chicago priest, and the church grew to ten families. In 1846, the first Confirmation in Lake County was administered at this church.

The community grew and in 1856, a new building was built. The original log cabin was moved to its current location on the grounds of the old St. John the Evangelist church in 1967 and is currently known as the Adoration Chapel. It sits in an old cemetery, in which many of the older headstones are so weathered, that you cannot decipher the dates.

St. John Cemetery is the home for this piece of Lake County history.
